Things You Can Do with Friends Besides Drinking

This isn’t so much a problem now but I realized when I was in my late teens, not yet away at college, a lot of life was life was just waiting around for the next place to drink. Maybe it’s just a rite of passage, maybe I was not the only alcoholic in that group. We drank on weekdays. We drank on the weekends. We drank when we had every excuse to and even when we didn’t. Nowadays I have a set of older friends (30s-40s) and I’m always the youngest of the group. Obviously I don’t drink at all and they drink minimally. So what do we do to amuse ourselves instead? Here are some ways we entertain ourselves and enjoy each others company:
  1. DND campaigns. I recently started a Monster of the Week with some of my friends. Monster of the Week is a little like DND which I’ve also played. Every person develops a character complete with background lore and weapons. Then they go off on quests, solve mysteries, kill monsters. Especially kill monsters. I am Anastasia Bonaparte, The Wronged (someone has killed my husband. Oh yeah it was my best friend. Oh and I’m seven months pregnant).

  1. Book Clubs I created a book club over the summer and it’s still going strong. We meet monthly and discuss the assigned reading which we each suggest and is usually picked randomly. I host everytime; my only stipulation is that my friends bring the snacks. And bring snacks they do: pretzels with homemade glaze, Oreos, popcorn (Like every type of popcorn), crisps, chips, cupcakes, chocolate…literally anything you can imagine. Of course the best part is the book discussion but snacks have a place in my heart.

  1. Girls Night This is obviously not just for girls. Any gender can enjoy foot massage with products from Lush. Burn a candle or oil diffuser as you and your friends give each other manicures and pedicures and facials. Can cost a little for supplies but much cheaper than an actual spa.

  1. Game Night. There are alot of games you could all play. In October my friends and I had a werewolf party (werewolf is a social deduction game that I am somewhat married to). Recently my brother taught me a game called werewords, that you can play with less people. Look it up. It’s super fun.

  1. Kayaking/ Hiking/Camping

Nature is (for the most part) free. And it’s alot of fun. Well, maybe not the hiking part. I absolutely hate hiking and at my weight it hates me. But kayaking is not only a workout its actually fun. And camping you can do so many things: play games, trade stories, eat marshmallows. I would like to go this year.

  1. Ice skating. Kind of self-explanatory. But I love the feeling of gliding across the ice, almost flying. Even stumbling and falling doesn’t feel as bad as you think it would be.

  1. Have a photoshoot

One of my best friends happens to be a photographer. Whenever he wants to test out a new camera or we just feel like having an adventure, we go to parks or (in the case of yesterday) Panera Bread. He films me staring out the window, staring at my reflection, holding my books in front of me, staring into the camera, looking away. Apparently I “take direction well”. It was a lot of fun.

  1. Get involved in your community. I love going to community events like Silent Reading which two of my friends invited me to on Monday or poetry slams or writing groups. Not only can you pal out with your existing friends, you can make some more.

So don’t go telling me the only thing ti do is drink. Because there is plenty more out there. Don’t limit yourself like I did.
