We are almost upon the day that “being single” becomes a societal issue. 364 days out of the year we go to work, school and community events acting like business as usual. However, for one momentous day in the middle of February being single becomes a Big Deal. And for some people, an Unpleasant Deal. I am in a relationship (going on three years) but even when I was single I didn’t mind being single on Valentine’s Day. There is usually a bevy of activities on Valentine’s Day and definitely not all of it is romance centered. For example, in the city Strange Neighbors (one of my favorite bands) is playing at a bar with a sexy vampire theme. You can’t go make friends with sexy vampire girls if you are in a relationship (well…..actually it depends on your relationship and what you clear with your partner).
My point being Valentine’s Day should be about self-care. Miley Cyrus said it best when she said she could buy herself flowers and take herself dancing. It is becoming increasingly popular to “date yourself”, to go to places you are interested in. You don’t have to pretend to like art or superhero movies or science. It is a date completely tailored to you and what you like, which you will never find in a partner unless you are dating a clone of yourself.
When we are children we get those store-bought cards for the entire class and stay up all night attaching pieces of candy to them. We would receive twenty-four cards in class the next day- Spongebob themed, Marvel themed, princess themed. Now we are happy to get just one. From the right person of course.
Single people out there here is my message to you: Don’t let one holiday ruin a weekend, a week, a month. There is so much more out there than a meal for two, a pricey bouquet and a box of dark chocolates. Why don’t you give a card or even make a card for someone else? It doesn’t have to be romantic. Make one for your best friend or your mom. Be that kindergartner, eager to pass out your cards in class. Focus on making other people happy and not just yourself. And just remember. It’s only a day.
