Yesterday I went to see Dream Sequence, an A24 studio film starring Nicolas Cage. Nicolas plays Paul Mathews, a tenured professor who starts appearing in people’s dreams. At first the dreams make Paul a celebrity and a popular one at that. But then things get twisted when Paul is seen raping, torturing, and murdering in people’s dreams. He becomes the subject of hate and fear. As someone who regularly gets nightmares, this movie was interesting to me. Concepts recycle themselves but the characters are usually different (ex-boyfriends tend to turn up now and then) Usually my nightmares are vivid due to my medication and sometimes graphic.
I liked the movie but I didn’t love it. A crazed man breaks into Paul’s house trying to kill him. The police explain the man was “manic” and hadn’t been taking his meds, Aren’t mentally ill people such a scapegoat? The other thing I noticed is that Paul Mathews is as narcissistic as they come. He only thinks of himself, never his wife (who he cheats on by the way) or his daughters. He is only thinking of his pain and that makes it hard to feel sorry for him. Enough about me, what do you think about me? That’s Paul.
